Chocolate pie is one of my favorite things to make. I enjoy any kind of baking, but there’s something old fashioned about a homemade pie that I just love. I will be putting quite a few pie recipes up in the future for you to try. Pies are not complicated, and with a couple of tips you can be a pro in no time. The pie recipes that I use are all pretty old. Most of them have been handed down from my husband’s family. I love making recipes that our families have enjoyed for generations. It feels like a connection to our heritage when we can enjoy some of the same recipes that our ancestors have.

Here are some other posts you may enjoy.

Chocolate Pie is Our Family Favorite

I decided to make chocolate pie today. This one is a winner with my entire family. My mother-in-law gave me this recipe shortly after my husband and I had married. It took me quite a few years to work up the nerve to actually make it. When I did, it turned out great! After that, I started making my own crust and trying out more pie recipes. You can find my pie crust recipe here. I do use store bought crust if I’m short on time. This recipe will make one deep dish pie, or two regular pies. My family prefers deep dish.

Tips For Making Meringue

You’ll notice that many pie recipes call for meringue. You can substitute it for whipped topping if you prefer. We all love meringue, so here is the link for the meringue recipe that I’ve used for years. If you are going to add meringue, be sure to separate your egg whites early enough that they can come to room temperature. This will give you fluffier meringue.

When you are making cream pies with meringue, always spread the meringue on a slightly warm filling. This will help keep the meringue from “weeping.” Weeping will look like little brownish colored droplets. It won’t hurt the flavor of the pie, it just looks a little sketchy. Once your pie is baked with the meringue, allow it to cool, then refrigerate. Your chocolate pie will usually keep about three days in the refrigerator. (If it lasts that long!)

Love, Jenn
