Cheap and Easy Candy Cane Glitter Candles

It’s no secret that Christmas is my absolute favorite holiday of the year. My grandmother and my mother passed their love of all things Christmas down to me. For instance, my grandmother always had her Christmas tree up by the week of Halloween! She just loved it that much. My mother always starts decorating by November 1st, so you see, it’s just in my DNA.

For most of my married life, I waited until Thanksgiving night to put up my Christmas tree out of respect for my husband. He just couldn’t wrap his head around decorating so early. Well, guess what? For the past several years, he’s told me to start decorating early to mid-November! 😂 I guess I’m rubbing off on him.

2020 has been an especially trying time for the world as a whole. I think that’s the reason that so many people started some of their Christmas decorating in October. People are just so ready for some happiness and cheer.

Here are some other posts you may enjoy.

Materials

I wanted to help spread some happiness myself, so I decided to post an easy tutorial to make those pricey candy cane glitter candles you see in specialty shops. It’s fun, easy and much cheaper that buying them pre-made. Here are the supplies you need.

Instructions

Take your candle and starting at the top, slowly wrap it with the double-sided tape. Make sure you don’t remove the outer layer of the tape yet. You’ll need to keep check that it’s wrapping tightly with no bunching or wrinkles. If your swirls are not looking like they’re spaced correcty, simply pull the tape up and re-adjust before continuing.

After you have your tape adjusted to your liking, remove a small section of the outer layer of tape to reveal the adhesive. If you plan to light your glitter candles, then you’ll want to make sure your glitter is not flammable. I poured a tiny mound in the corner of my stainless steel kitchen sink and put a candle lighter flame to it. You want to check for any fire or sparking. Now, gently shake your glitter over the adhesive and cover that section well. I like to use a glitter brush to evenly distribute the glitter and press it to the adhesive. It helps to have less waste. You can find these at your local craft store, typically right by the glitter.

Continue revealing the adhesive and applying glitter all the way to the bottom. Use your glitter brush or small paint brush to make sure the glitter is pressed to the adhesive.

Now take your candle and glitter brush to the sink. Tap your brush firmly on the edge of the sink until most of the excess glitter has been knocked off. Next, start brushing away all of the excess glitter from the white part of your candle. This usually takes a few minutes. I like to brush the excess towards the adhesive as much a possible, being careful not to brush off the glitter I’ve applied to the tape.

Tips

Now you have a festive candy cane glitter candle for your table centerpiece, mantle or floral arraignment at a fraction of the cost of store-bought ones! One last thing. It would also be really pretty to use 1/8″ double-sided tape. I would put two stripes on the tapers running parallel to each other with a small space between. I wanted to make one to show you, but oddly enough, everywhere I checked was out of 1/8″ double-sided tape. If you make either of these candles I would love to see them! Just send a pic to jennifer@polishingpemberley.com. I can’t wait to see your creations!

I pray that you have a wonderful Christmas holiday, and that your family is safe and happy. If you’ve lost someone this past year, please know that you are in my heart and prayers. Here’s praying for a much brighter 2021!
